Our History

The Jewish Federation of the Berkshires founded the Berkshire Immigrant Center (formerly known as the New American Citizenship Coalition) in 1997 to assist Berkshire County immigrants, regardless of race and religious affiliation, to become American citizens.

For over 25 years the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA) has been committed to promoting the rights, opportunities, and well-being of immigrant and refugee communities.  As of July 1, 2012 MIRA has officially become BIC’s fiscal agent and provides direct financial and programmatic oversight.

The Berkshire Immigrant Center remains the only program in Berkshire County which offers comprehensive services to meet the unique challenges faced by our rapidly growing immigrant community. With MIRA’s support, the Center is strengthening its direct service delivery as well as expanding its policy advocacy, public education, capacity building and welcoming initiatives in Berkshire County and the surrounding areas.
